Reflection: On Saturday (12/5/2020), I went on a stroll around the island of Belle Isle on the James River in Richmond, Virginia. The island is connected to downtown with a suspension footbridge that is connected to the highway above. The site was first explored by Captain John Smith in 1607 and from 1862-1865 was used as a prison for some 30,000 union soldiers during the Civil War. Later, the power company built a hydroelectric power plant on the island in 1904. Some remnants of the old structures still exist today has mostly been retaken by nature. It was a cool and cloudy day with the sun just peeking out occasionally from the large cotton-like cloud cover. I used a tripod for most of the shots, experimenting with extended shutter speeds to smooth the rapids on the turbulent James River and to calm the lightly rippled water by the old quarry. I used two layers of filters to cut down on the excess light to allow for longer shutter times and a wired remote to avoid camera shake.
